#Partners Powering Champions at the ROVAL

After celebrating IndyCar championships with Team Penske in 2014 (Will Power), 2016 (Simon Pagenaud), and 2017 (Josef Newgarden), we challenged ourselves to come up with a better way to not only celebrate the championship, but to create an idea that would break through the clutter and give us a broader platform to tell our story.

The platform to house the celebration came at Charlotte Motor Speedway's ROVAL NASCAR Cup race – a unique and timely venue for the concept. With the IndyCar championship finishing up just a week before, that resulted in Josef Newgarden's second career championship for Team Penske, why not continue the festivities with Charlotte-based Team Penske in NASCAR?

The idea was to bring the champion driver to the ROVAL for a media press conference, to be followed by exhibition laps on track with an actual Shell-Pennzoil branded IndyCar. This concept would surely cause a stir for fans and media to speculate on, while also showcasing Josef's and the team's accomplishments. Most importantly, it highlights the common thread between all of it – Shell and Pennzoil as a key technology partner at the core of tremendous on-track success for Team Penske in many racing disciplines.

We integrated these assets by having Josef drive a series of exhibition laps in an IndyCar on the same track NASCAR uses while it was rife with media and live TV. It was the first time an IndyCar was ever on the innovative ROVAL circuit, first time in 20 years an IndyCar had been at the track, and it got a lot of fans and media alike to reignite the question…will there be a doubleheader weekend and collaboration between the two series?
