Daytona 500
Summary
The Daytona 500 signifies the start of the NASCAR race season and is commonly referred to as “The Great American Race.” After two years of mixed/virtual/hybrid events, the 2022 Daytona 500 marked one of the first fully-subscribed and operational events exiting the pandemic. The results were extraordinary with Fox Sports stating it was their best performance for the race since pre-pandemic 2019. Onsite, the event was completely sold out with all grandstand, corporate suites and camping slots at full capacity.
Shell-Pennzoil partner Team Penske scored victory lane for the second race in a row with the Pennzoil-powered Austin Cindric winning on the final lap of the race.
Leading up to the event, we worked with NASCAR legend Larry McReynolds to hear stories from Joey’s career that we built into a video series called “10 for 10.” Our guests got to enjoy the first showing of the summarized mini-documentary, seen below.
“My favorite part was meeting the customers, meeting the Shell staff, and, somewhat selfishly, I really, really enjoyed the race! What a race!”
Guest Experience
Guest Experience
They called the High Bank Suites their basecamp at the track for the weekend, with remarkable Turn 1 views and indoor/outdoor comfort. With nearly unanimous excellent marks gathered from a post-event satisfaction survey, we look forward to hosting again at next year's event.
Leading up to the race on Sunday, guests enjoyed fully escorted transportation from the hotel to the suite at Daytona International Speedway. Once onsite, they became fully part of the team with a behind-the-scenes tour of the world-class operation that is Team Penske.
Every time we bring guests this close to the action, with this much VIP access, it feels like the first time.

The Daytona 500 appears to be the most-viewed single sport telecast of the weekend, beating out @Olympics and @NBA All-Star.

➖ NASCAR notes that in 2019, the race did not go up against Olympics and that 2022 share, a slightly different metric than rating, was up 24% from 2019. pic.twitter.com/OrP7VgMpcr
Business Engagement
Business Engagement
Shell hosted a business luncheon for all guests that provided a unique opportunity to share thoughts on how to adapt, grow, and prosper with Shell through the energy transition. This special event brought together Shell leadership from all around the world face to face with customers to discuss the future of lubricants, mobility, the energy transition, and sustainability.
A massive advantage of being engaged in sponsorship is that it gives you a platform to bring the most important stakeholders of your business together. On Saturday evening, guests from every corner of Shell's businesses, came together and spent meaningful time connecting. The evening started off with a welcome address from Shell Leadership and moved into a great discussion between Roger Penske and Joey Logano about how important technical partnerships are to producing great results on and off the race track.
The evening was capped off with a presentation to Joey Logano of a custom framed print celebrating his 10 years as driver of the No. 22 with Shell, Pennzoil and Team Penske. A metal plaque commemorating the milestone was also made available to all attendees.
Top customers and leadership from: Shell Downstream, Shell Lubricants, Shell Mobility, Shell Sectors and Decarbonization, Shell Corporate, Motiva, Team Penske, various wholesalers, distributors, and other top-performing customers. When you have this many influential people together sharing time and engaging with one another, it has the makings to create lasting business opportunities.
