NASCAR and INDYCAR Team Collaboration Media Recap
NASCAR and INDYCAR Team Collaboration Media Recap
In 2021 the NASCAR Cup Series departed from the traditional oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the road course for the first time. It was also a double-header weekend for the first time with the NTT INDYCAR Series. Chevrolet is unique to any other manufacturers competing over the weekend in that they have cars competing in both series, presenting an exclusive media opportunity to take advantage of.
After overcoming some obstacles and logistics, we were able to bring Rinus VeeKay, driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing in INDYCAR to the Chevrolet “Driver in the Loop” Simulator in Huntersville, NC early to collaborate with William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.
Rinus, who won the INDYCAR race earlier this year (May), his first career win - on Indianapolis’ road course, helped William on learning key elements of the new track. William was competing on the road course at Indy for the first time, like many other Cup drivers. Rinus is 20 years old, William is 22. William used what he learned to win the pole for Sunday’s race and paid tribute to the work with Rinus.
This is the second pole of the season for you. Take us back to earlier in the week when you got a little bit of help from Rinus Veekay in the Chevy simulator, who won here in an INDYCAR. How helpful was that?
“That honestly might have helped my lap because I felt like through Turns 13 and 14 as you get up on the Oval and go back to the right, he had an interesting technique there with the brakes. I was like quizzing him on it and trying to figure out what I could learn from it. Obviously, they use a lot more brake. They are able to turn a lot faster than we are. But it was really cool to see how up to speed he was, and thanks to him for doing that. It was really cool. ”
During their SIM work, Byron took to the cockpit first, with Veekay delivering information on braking zones, corner entry, corner exit, and several other nuances of the Road Course at IMS.
Sharing techniques at the simulator can provide extremely useful information from series to series. @WilliamByron and @rinusveekay took full advantage of the opportunity to do exactly that. pic.twitter.com/wcocRuJkcN
